Join the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and help us fulfil our mission of promoting lung health in low- and middle-income countries. The Union is an independent and international scientific organisation based in Paris, and committed to tuberculosis control since 1920. Our members are renowned experts in their field. You will be able to communicate with peers about your work in tuberculosis and lung health. The Union has 3 working languages: English, French and Spanish. Our web site and most of our documents exist in these languages.

Individual members

Individual members are physicians, microbiologists, researchers, epidemiologists, veterinaries, nurses, laboratory staff, students, teachers, trainers, activists ... They subscribe to the aims of The Union, are up to date in their membership dues and are affiliated to a Scientific Section and sub-section.

Your benefits

  • Receive our scientific journal 'The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease' (Impact Factor in 2007 : 2,240). This monthly journal brings you the latest in research, as well as original articles and commissioned reviews, in tuberculosis and lung health. In addition to clinical, biological and epidemiological aspects, the Journal addresses issues of implementation and assessment of field projects for tuberculosis control and lung health. Articles available in Russian, Chinese, Spanish and French. The Journal can be accessed online through www.ingentaconnect.com

Members who receive the print version of the Journal can also receive the print version of our technical guides, advocacy materials and other educational resources, upon request
  • Join one of the 4 Scientific Sections (Tuberculosis, Lung Health, HIV and Tobacco Control), as well as a sub-section. The Sections contribute to the content and coordination of the annual Union World Conference on Lung Health. By joining the Scientific Section of your choice, you are entitled to vote through the Chair of your Section at the Annual General Assembly held every year during the World Conference
  • Attend our World Conference on Lung Health at reduced rates. The World Conference is CME-accredited since 4 years (Continued Medical Education).

Benefactor members and 15-year members

Benefactor members and 15-year members are individual members who choose to financially support The Union in its projects and activities. Thanks to their generosity, The Union can fulfil its mission of promoting lung health in the world. Join our 88-year old cause and become an international activist in public health and scientific innovation. You will enjoy the same benefits as individual members; you will be affiliated to a Scientific section and participate in the proceedings of the General assembly with the right of discussion and vote through the President of your Scientific section. In addition, you will be invited to the President’s Cocktail, which takes place during the annual World Conference; and your name will be part of The Union benefactors’ list published in the annual Activity Report.

Organisational members

Organisational members are non-governmental organisations (NGOs), professional societies, nurses or patients associations, foundations, or Ministries of Health. These members share the vision of The Union: the prevention and control of respiratory diseases and related health problems. Several organisations from the same country can join The Union as organisational members. As members, they receive support and resources for their own activities of advocacy, education, control and treatment of respiratory diseases, and member recruitment. They can network with peer organisations and experts in lung health from other countries; and collaborate with the personnel and consultants of The Union on numerous projects. Organisational members pay an annual fee that is related to their fixed costs budget. These funds provide essential support for The Union’s activities in technical assistance, research and education.

Constituent members

Constituent members represent their countries in The Union. There can only be one constituent member per country; consequently these members play a very prominent role in the international respiratory health scientific community. Most often, the principal lung association of a country or the National Tuberculosis Control Programme serves as constituent member. As part of an international network, constituent members influence health care and public health policies in their country and abroad. Constituent Members pay a yearly membership fee based on World Health Organization indicators related to their country’s level of development. These funds make a vital contribution to The Union’s innovative research, education and technical assistance programmes. Many successful initiatives, such as the “Child Lung Health Project” and the 'Asthma Drug Facility', received their “start-up” funding from the support provided by these membership fees.
